Welcome to the new site!

This website has replaced my old site, dominothoughts.com, and if you went to that domain, you’ve found the new home. I am working on getting all the old technical content migrated over, some of the old personal or out-of-date posts will not make the move. If you ended up here clicking a link for the Domino Thoughts site, try searching for the subject and if I’ve migrated the article, you should find it there. If you don’t find it, please reach out to me using the links at the bottom and I’ll get it migrated over.

What’s new as of 1 Oct 2019?

IBM Notes 9.0.1 on MacOS and Java 8 Update Higher Than 152 Not Working

An IBM Technote was published last week regarding IBM Notes 9.0.1 for MacOS and the Java 8 update 152 or higher. After this update, the Notes client on Mac doesn’t respond to mouse or keyboard input which is less than helpful and almost not useful. The workaround for the moment is to downgrade to Java 8 update 151, which appears to be the highest level that doesn’t fail with Notes. To get the Java update, you need to go to the Oracle Java download archive site - http://www. [Read More]

IBM Notes 9.0.1 Java patch and IF1 installation tip

Earlier in October, IBM released JVM patches for Notes and Domino for both the 1.6 and 1.8 versions of the JVM. Here’s a link to the Interim Fix page with the download links. This week, Interim Fix 1 for the 9.0.1 Notes client was released as well. If you have previously installed the JVM patches for the Notes client, you will want to re-install the JVM patch as the IF puts the previous version back in place. [Read More]

IBM Technote: Customizing Default Navigation Order of Apps in Connections 6.0 Mobile App

A technote published today outlines the ability to customize the default order of the apps displayed in the IBM Connections Mobile app. This does require IBM Connections 6.0 and the June 2017 update to be installed for the new setting to work. See this technote for the details on configuring the new setting. 📰 9 Aug 2019: As IBM has sold Connections and their support site may not show this permanently, I’ve added the text from the technote below [Read More]

IBM Traveler 9.0.1.16 - A Note On Upgrading

So IBM Traveler 9.0.1.16 is now available. We’ve been waiting on it to upgrade our internal server that was on an older version, mostly due to the issue that Detlev posted about in December. That is “fixed” in this release, however my experience upgrading revealed that it wasn’t so much fixed as the command that you need to issue to resolve the error was enabled for use. So, after upgrading Traveler from the . [Read More]

IBM Verse On-Premises - some thoughts after using for two weeks

We installed IBM Verse On-Premises (VOP) the day it was released. See my previous post about the installation (spoiler alert…simple). This post will cover my impressions after having used it for two weeks as my main access point to my company email. Basic Usage: Overall, I’m pretty pleased with the VOP 1.0 release. Reading and composing emails are easy and straightforward. When new mail arrives, the browser tab adds a red dot to the Verse icon to let me know there’s something new. [Read More]

Initial impressions on IBM Verse On-Premises 1.0

NOTE: This is a “first impression” post after working with VOP for a few hours. I didn’t participate in the betas, so this is a fresh experience. So, as has been announced on the interwebs today, IBM Verse On-Premises 1.0 (VOP) was made available for download today. Part number: CNDG8ML We had some time today, so Chris Whisonant and I installed it and setup the integration with Connections. So Chris did the Domino side and I handled the Connections side. IBM Connections 5.5 - Errors in SystemOut.log cleaning up HOMEPAGE database

Working with a client on IBM Connections 5.5 CR1, they were noticing errors in the SystemOut.log of the InfraCluster around 11pm regularly. Lately, the errors were filling up 1GB of logs for a minute when it occurred. The “critical” piece of information was the line below: Error for batch element #1: A parent row cannot be deleted Page 10 of 67 because the relationship "HOMEPAGE.NR_READ_STATUS.FK_READ_STATUS_STR" restricts the deletion.. SQLCODE=-532, SQLSTATE=23504, DRIVER=4. [Read More]

File Downloads From Connections Using SPNEGO

With IBM Connections, there are options to utilize different SSO options. One of the eaiser is using Windows Integrated Authentication, better known as SPNEGO. This uses the AD domain and the user’s Windows credentials to issue a ticket that can be used to authenticate users against other resources, such as an IBM Connections site. In some cases, this doesn’t work like it should. One example is if the user gets an email with a link to download a file stored in Connections, but hasn’t yet authenticated with the site. IBM Connections 5.5 CR1 and Connections Mail - issue with calendar picker

After updating a test server with Connections 5.5 CR1, a customer noticed that the calendar picker in Activities would stay open after selecting a Due Date for an activity. This didn’t happen in 5.5 or earlier versions. We opened a PMR with IBM and after some back and forth, according to IBM the issue is related to Connections Mail being enabled on the server. If you don’t have Connections Mail enabled, there’s no issue. [Read More]
